Current political representation of Kenyan women stands at 19.7%, way below the constitutional provision of at least 30% of either gender. Developing a mechanism for the implementation of the two-third gender rule has been met with resistance including proposals to scrap it from the Constitution. Deep rooted patriarchal cultures and practises have contributed to inadequate political will to fully implement the two third gender rule. In 2013 general elections, only 16 women out of the 290 members were elected into the national assembly, no woman was elected in the positions of the 47 governors and 47 Senators. All the 18 women in the Senate are nominated. Of the 47 deputy governors, only 8 are women. Only 76 of the 1050 elected members of the county Assembly are women.
Oxfam in Kenya in partnership with Youth Agenda and FIDA Kenya with financial support from the European Union are working together to increase representation of elected women in the next general elections in five Counties: Kisii, Nakuru, Wajir, Turkana and Nairobi.
